Creatine: What the Science Says

What Creatine Does

Creatine is a compound that is naturally produced in the liver, kidneys and pancreas. Its primary job is to support the phosphocreatine system, an energy-buffering mechanism that helps rapidly regenerate adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the molecule that powers nearly every cellular process. When the body is under sudden metabolic demand – whether lifting weights or deep in concentration – creatine steps in to help restore ATP almost instantly.
